I just don’t have it in me.

Taking a moment to pause. In today’s world, that is typically unfamiliar or unaccepted.

I have had the hardest time allowing myself to take time for me. Usually, that means I need it the most. When I notice myself thinking “I just don’t have it in me.”

You might experience that thought, too: answering a phone call, running an errand, cleaning the kitchen.

Where did that message of “always be productive” come from? In speaking with another therapist, we discovered that question. Ask yourself: where did I get my main message related to productivity?

  • Family?

  • Learned behaviors?

  • Society?

  • Social Media?

  • I could argue it’s a little bit of all of them.

Let’s challenge that. But how…?

Think of a quiet, moment-to-pause activity.

Could be a walk, taking a seat and picking up a book, laying down and listening to music, sitting outside and noticing how fresh (or not…it’s very humid currently) the air feels.

But thinking of a quiet, moment-to-pause activity makes me feel anxious (or bored).

Good. Let’s push that a little further. That feeling means you are right on the cusp of change or growth. Change and growth feel uncomfortable. They’re supposed to.

You potentially want to experience that change…or you wouldn’t be reading this.

Give it a try…come chat with me about how it feels.
